NCAA Tournament odds: Bad beats, betting results for first-round games

How did you do on your wagers for college basketball‘s round of 64 during March Madness?

Here’s everything you need to know about the first round of the NCAA Tournament — the point spread, moneyline, total over/under and results – for Thursday’s and Friday’s games (with all odds via FOX Bet).

COMPLETED GAMES

Michigan State 74, Davidson 73

Point spread: Push as Michigan State was -1
Moneyline: Michigan State wins as -125 favorite (bet $10 to win $18 total); Davidson was -105 underdog (bet $10 to win $19.52 total) 
Total scoring over/under: Over 140 points scored by both teams combined (147)

NOTE: A wild finish paid off for over bettors (140). The under was looking good with three minutes to go as the Spartans led 64-59 (123 total). Things looked even better as the teams went scoreless for the next 1:45. But teams exploded for 24 combined points in a 73-second span (14 by the Wildcats) to cruise past the over.

Michigan State fans were happy to escape with the win but bettors who took the Spartans -1 were not happy at the end as a 3-pointer by Davidson’s Hyunjung Lee with two seconds remaining resulted in a push. The Spartans used a 23-14 to take the lead for good before Lee’s 3-pointer.

Wisconsin 67, Colgate 60

Point spread: Colgate (+7.5) covers by losing by fewer than 7.5 points (7)
Moneyline: Wisconsin wins as -345 favorite (bet $10 to win $12.90 total); Colgate was +250 underdog (bet $10 to win $35 total)
Total scoring over/under: Under 139.5 points scored by both teams combined (127)

NOTE: Colgate raced out to a seven-point lead more than six minutes into the game but it was Wisconsin backers who gave 7.5 points who were singing the blues despite the Badgers pulling away for the victory.

Wisconsin’s Johnny Davis made two free throws with 12 seconds remaining as the Badgers pushed their lead to 67-58.

The celebration for Badgers backers was short-lived as Colgate’s Nelly Cummings made a layup with five seconds to play, resulting in the seven-point margin as the Badgers failed to cover. Depending which side you bet on with the points, Cummings’ layup either made your ticket a winner or a crumpled piece of paper.

TCU 69, Seton Hall 42

NOTE: You could spot the Duke fans during the final seconds who gave the 19 points – they were the frustrated ones despite the easy win. Theo John’s tip-in with 10 seconds remaining pushed the Blue Devils’ lead to 78-59 (on the number). The Titans’ Dante Maddox Jr. threw down a meaningless dunk – well, meaningless to people who didn’t bet the spread – with four seconds to go as Fullerton covered.

Arizona 87, Wright State 70

NOTE: The Wildcats’ chances of covering went out the window as Arizona scored just two points in the final 1:52. Pelle Larsson made two free throws with 1:10 to go for a 87-67 lead but Arizona would not score again, missing two shots, as Wright State made three free throws to cover.

Illinois 54, Chattanooga 53

NOTE: Chattanooga moneyline bettors (+275) were less than a minute from cashing in. Illinois led for only 25 seconds against upset-minded Chattanooga but it was enough to overtake the Mocs. The Illini trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half before taking their first lead on Kofi Cockburn’s jumper with 46 seconds to go, 52-51. The Mocs took the lead back 14 seconds later on Malachi Smith’s two free throws. Illinois’ Alfonso Plummer made two free throws with 12 seconds to go, then Smith had a shot blocked and missed a jumper with three seconds to go.

Texas 81, Virginia Tech 73

NOTE: There are bad beats, then there are bets that never stood a chance. Bettors who played the over (130.5 points) were probably questioning their decision-making process as the Buckeyes and Ramblers slogged to a combined 41 points in the first half as Ohio State led 23-18 at the break. The under covered by a comfortable 35.5 points.

Murray State 92, San Francisco  87 (OT)

NOTE: This game was the opposite of Loyola-Ohio State. The teams hit the over during regulation as they were tied at 73 heading into overtime. The 146 combined points in regulation zoomed past the total of 137.5 points, and the teams combined for 33 more in the five-minute overtime (remember, Loyola-Ohio State scored only 41 in the 20-minute first half) for a victory lap for over bettors.
