Maddie Faryniarz sunk just one field goal Tuesday night, but it was a big one.
The Monroe High senior took a quick pass in the corner and faded away for a long-range 2-pointer with just 7 seconds remaining to deliver a 51-50 victory over Ann Arbor Huron.
Faryniarz scored all 5 of her points in the fourth quarter. She has scored in just seven games this season for the 7-4 Trojans, with Monroe going 6-1 in games that she scores at least a point.
“We tell all our girls to keep shooting as long as they are good looks at the basket,” Monroe coach Joe Regalado said. “We want them all to shoot more.”
Regalado was not surprised that Faryniarz felt confident enough to take the game-winning shot Tuesday.
“She is a very smart player and she put herself in a good spot that was in her comfort zone,” he said. “She could have faded to the 3-point line like most kids want to, but she got to her spot and made it.”
Huron (4-8) charged into the lead after holding Monroe to just 7 points in the third quarter.
Monroe led 23-18 at halftime but trailed heading into the final period. Monroe had three players foul out before the end of the game, including leading-scorer Olivia Bussell, who finished with 24 points.
“We’re down to only 10 girls right now and all 10 played tonight and played key roles,” Regalado said. “We really had to go deep into the bench and the girls stepped up. … It was truly a team victory.”
Freshman Sophia Bussell, who finished with 11 points, came into the week leading all players in the Monroe County Region in 3s. She picked up an assist on Faryniarz’s game winner.
“Sophia could’ve pulled up, but she had enough faith to hit Maddie who faired out to the wing and was wide open,” Regalado said. “We practice that play and save it for end-of-the-game scenarios. We hope we don’t ever need, but we practice it a couple times a week and it paid off.”
