Best Sports Games for PS5
Below is a list of the best sports games for PS5. These are the top sports games available on the PlayStation 5 right now, presented in no particular order, as determined by our editorial team.
NBA 2K22 (PS5)
Publisher: 2K Sports / Developer: Visual Concepts
- Type: Simulation
- Sport: Basketball
- Players: 4
NBA 2K22 is peerless in the sports genre for its sheer scope, and while many may frown at Visual Concepts’ attempt at an online open world RPG in the ever-popular MyCareer mode, there’s no question you could lose hundreds of hours to this title. With one of the most fleshed out Franchise modes on the market in MyNBA and a rewarding Ultimate Team alternative in MyTeam, this is the biggest and best presented sports game on the PS5. Some nice improvements to defence mean that it plays pretty clean on the court as well.
Riders Republic (PS5)
Publisher: Ubisoft / Developer: Ubisoft Annecy
- Type: Arcade
- Sport: Extreme Sports
- Players: 1
A game that brings something a little different to the sports genre on the PS5, Riders Republic is a Ubisoft open world game with a cycling/skiing/wingsuiting skin. A massively multiplayer online sandbox, filled with both silly and serious challenges, this game is colossal in scale – something it underpins with its outrageous Mass Race competitions. It can look a little ugly and its too-cool-for-school style will grate, but cycling down mountains at 100kmph is still an exhilarating experience.
MLB The Show 21 (PS5)
Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment / Developer: WWS San Diego Studio
- Type: Simulation
- Sport: Baseball
- Players: 2
MLB The Show 21 feels like a half-step into the PS5 generation, because its industry leading presentation has stagnated somewhat. Make no mistake, though, this has some of the best gameplay in the genre and one of the deepest Franchise modes available, with only NBA 2K22 really rivalling it. Despite this, Diamond Dynasty is the true star: this generous card collecting mode is absolutely jam-packed with content, and unlike other options in the genre, you don’t need to spend a cent to make the most of it.
FIFA 22 (PS5)
Publisher: EA Sports / Developer: EA Vancouver
- Type: Simulation
- Sport: Football
- Players: 4
In a year where eFootball has effectively elected itself unfit to compete, EA Sports may have put the final nail in Konami’s long-running franchise with its best soccer simulation in years. FIFA 22 feels extraordinary on the field, owing to a bunch of new animations and vastly improved ball physics. While it’s not without its shortcomings – namely microtransactions – additions to Career mode, like the overhauled Player Career, add value to the offline experience, while Volta Football’s new Fall Guys-style party games are also pretty fun.
F1 2021 (PS5)
Publisher: EA Sports / Developer: Codemasters
- Type: Simulation
- Sport: Formula One
- Players: 2
Between its corny cinematic campaign Braking Point and enormously in-depth co-operative Career mode, F1 2021 sits alongside the likes of NBA 2K22 and MLB The Show 21 as one of the most feature complete sports games on the market. Crucially, Codemasters has done an incredible job out on the track, too, with an enormous number of settings making this racer appealing to both casual Sunday drivers and experienced petrol heads.
NHL 22 (PS5)
Publisher: EA Sports / Developer: EA Vancouver
- Type: Simulation
- Sport: Ice Hockey
- Players: 4
As part of the transition to the Frostbite Engine, the team at EA Canada has achieved one important thing: don’t gut the game completely. NHL 22 may share many of its features and modes with its immediate PS4 predecessor, but at least it’s not been gutted like the disastrous NHL 15. The implementation of X-Factors adds some personality to the rink, and the Franchise mode is still more in-depth than many of EA Sports’ alternatives in the genre.
Tennis World Tour 2: Complete Edition (PS5)
Publisher: Nacon / Developer: Big Ant Studios
- Type: Simulation
- Sport: Tennis
- Players: 4
From a pure presentation perspective, Tennis World Tour 2: Complete Edition is by far the worst game on this list – even though it looks and runs a lot sharper on the PS5, compared to its PS4 counterpart. Inspired by the gameplay in PS3 classic Top Spin 4, this game captures the ebb-and-flow of tennis rallies quite well, and includes a reasonably robust Career mode with a good sense of progression. But a lack of animations and overall polish do let it down, even if there’s a sense the developer has something to work with here.
Madden NFL 22 (PS5)
Publisher: EA Sports / Developer: EA Tiburon
- Type: Simulation
- Sport: American Football
- Players: 2
EA Sports’ flagship American football franchise has been left behind by many of the other sports games on this list, but Madden NFL 22 has at least got the brand back on track. Overdue improvements to the Franchise mode mean it finally has some key systems, like game week planning and coordinators. It’s still a long way off where it needs to be, but Ultimate Team has some good content and The Yard is an enjoyable backyard alternative to authentic football. The less said about Face of the Franchise, though, the better.
